Lessons: 72 hours of front lessons in the field of electronic and electromagnetic circuit and systems for Internet of Things (IoT);

Period: July 17-28. 7.5 hours/day for 8 working day;

Final Examination: After passing the exam the University of Pisa will register the course as an official exam of 9 ETCS (European Credit Transfer System). The Summer School "Enabling Technologies for IoT" is member of the network of European Summer Schools;

Target: Master and PhD students, early stage researchers and practitioners with a background on circuits and systems;

Language: English;

Description: The summer school provides theoretical and practical (with hands-on CAD session) lessons about recent advances in enabling technologies, electronics and electromagnetics, for future wireless transceivers, systems and networks in scenarios such as IoT and Cyber-Physical-Systems (CPS). Wireless circuits and systems and internet technology are becoming pervasive in many applications fields such as logistic (e.g. RF identification), vehicle industry (e.g. connected cars, advanced driver assistance systems, V2V and V2I wireless communications, radar, lidar), automation in industrial or domotic scenarios (e.g. wireless sensor and actuator networks), smart manufacturing (e.g. industry 4.0), health&wellness (e.g. wireless wearable sensing and biomedical circuits).

The new challenges connected to the enabling technologies will be exolored, such as Electromagnetic Compatibility/interference (EMC/EMI), miniaturization of components by integrating active and passive devices in the same chip (System-on-Chip) or package (System-in-a-Package), ultra low-power consumption for extended battery life, high-bandwidth connections by exploiting mm-wave spectrum capability, high-efficiency energy harvesting and power conversion, high-performance analog/digital and digital/analog converters, to name just a few.

The seasonal school includes an IoT Industry Special Day focused on Industrial and Educational Needs in the IoT Era and an INTEL IoT Functional safety Day.

Lecturers: lectures will be given by professors from 4 international Universities plus IEEE Distinguished Lectures:

-       University of Pisa, University of Pavia, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy)

-       University of Kiel (Germany)

-       Rovira I Virgili University of Tarragona (Spain)

-       Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble (France)

Proceedings: In 2017 a book from IEEE CASS and River Publisher will be printed including all summer school slides and notes.


2016 Edition

The 2016 Summer school was a success since 31 students from 12 different nations (Germany, Brazil, India, Italia, Sweden, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Morocco), see figure below, participated to lessons held by Professors of University of Pisa and University of Kiel discussing the new technological and educational trends in the fields of electronics, electromagnetism and communications for IoT. During the summer school an IoT Industry special day was held, involving speakers from big international companies (STMicroelectronics, Anritsu, Linear Technology, IDS) and from Small Medium Enterprises (Cubit, Zerynth, SinTau).

All 31 students passed the final exam (registered).

In 2016 an e-book with official proceedings, with ISBN, has been published.
